Complementary Therapies for Lupus

There are complementary therapies that may enhance or even reduce your other Lupus treatments. As always consult your doctor before undertaking any new therapy.

Massage

Some patients have found massage to be a very helpful addition to Lupus treatment while others have found it harmful. It all depends on the person.

Acupuncture

There is anecdotal evidence that acupuncture has helped Lupus symptoms. Further scientific study needs to be done to confirm this. There have been studies that show acupuncture helps back pain and Fibromyalgia.

Hypnotherapy / Self-Hypnosis

Studies have shown hypnotherapy useful in reducing chronic pain. Lupus is a disease that is aggravated by stress, any therapy that reduces stress can only be beneficial.

Yoga

There have been no clinical trials on the benefits of yoga in Lupus, however there is a great deal of anecdotal evidence of it's ability to relieve stress, anxiety and chronic pain.

Meditation / Prayer

Once again meditation and prayer reduce stress and enhance a calm, relaxed state of mind, all things that are helpful in Lupus patients.

While these therapies may help ease Lupus symptoms or even reduce flares, never stop taking medication without your doctor's prior knowledge.
