Online Lupus Support

There are many websites that can help you connect with people who can relate to your situation! There are a few things you need to know, however, before you delve into the world of online support.

ALWAYS... Consider the source, you will find medical advice, tips, and information all over the Internet, especially on message boards and social networking sites. Not all of this information is accurate or even safe. You must always be careful who you take advice from. Always check with your doctor before making ANY medical decision.

Be careful what you share.  Once you post a picture, story, comment, etc. on the Internet, it is out there forever. People can copy, pass on or keep your information with or without your permission. Never post anything you don't want "the world" to have access to. On some websites you can protect your information with privacy settings.

You can read the terms of use and privacy policies on a website to find out how your information may be used by the website owner.

There are several different types of sites you can find support on:

Social Networking Sites - These are websites where you can create a profile with information about yourself. These profiles are then used to connect with other people who may have similar interests as you. Examples of these sites are MySpace, FaceBook and WeAreLupus.org. These sites can help you connect with other Lupus fighters that can relate to what you are going through.

Blogs - A blog is an online journal. Reading other people's blogs can help you feel not so alone. Writing a blog can be very therapeutic as well as helpful to others.

Message Boards - These are like bulletin boards where people can post a question, idea, thought, rant, etc. and other members can post answers or responses. Rules vary by board.

Lupus Websites - There are many Lupus organizations' websites, Lupus informational sites, and Lupus fighters with websites
