Lupus Myocarditis

What is it?

The myocardium is the muscular tissue of the heart.  Myocarditis is inflammation of the myocardium.  In active Lupus, immune complexes can be made that cause inflammation in the myocardium.  Serious heart muscle disease is not common in Lupus.  Myocarditis can lead to tissue damage and lead to heart muscle being replaced by scar tissue.

Symptoms may include

Unexplained rapid heart beat

Irregular heart beat

Heart failure

Diagnosis

The best test to diagnose Myocarditis is an EKG.

Treatment

Treatment usually includes corticosteroids.  Immunosuppressants may also be used if inflammation persists.
