What Causes Lupus?

There is no known cure for Lupus.  One reason for that is that researchers still do not know what causes Lupus.  They do believe that it is a combination of genetic and environmental factors that cause Lupus.  Below are some theories and things being studied as possible causes.  Remember none of these things have been proven.

Estrogen - Perhaps the most common suspect in the cause of Lupus is estrogen.  Reasons for this include the disparity between men and women (10%-90%) with Lupus, the fact that Lupus typically comes on in the childbearing years (often during puberty or pregnancy), and the fact that it typically eases after menopause.  Many studies are being conducted on Lupus and Estrogen.

Stress - Stress, and/or the way stress in dealt with is a common theory as a possible environmental trigger for Lupus.

Epstein Barr Virus - Many Lupus patients have had a previous battle with the Epstein Barr Virus.  A study found that the death rate from autoimmune diseases including Lupus are significantly higher among teachers as opposed to other professionals.

Pollution - Some people believe that smog, radiation, water contamination, etc. can trigger Lupus.

Silicone Breast Implants - Actress Mary McDonough and others believe their Lupus was triggered by leaking silicone breast implants.

IRAK1 Gene - This is a gene found on the X chromosome that researchers have linked to Lupus which may explain why Lupus is found 90% of the time in women. more..

Vitamin Deficiency - There are studies being conducted on the role of vitamin deficiency, particularly Vitamin D Deficiency, in Lupus.  more...

Birth Control Pills - A new study links birth control pills to the development of Lupus.  more...

Cell Turnover - A theory on this was written by a young man in the 80's and is starting to get some credibility.  more...

Mercury - A study of brazilian miners showed mercury to alter the immune system possible triggering Lupus. more...
