Flying With Lupus

When you have Lupus everything you do takes more energy and planning ahead.  Taking an airline flight is certainly no exception.  Below, you will find some tips that might make your next airplane ride easier.

Plan ahead to take it easy the day before AND the day after your flight.  A day to rest and recoup will make the rest of the trip more manageable.

Carry on a few days, at least, of medication just incase you unexpectedly have a delay or stay over, or the airline looses your luggage.

You may need to take extra pain medications, anxiety medications, diuretics, etc.  Always check with your doctor before changing your medications!

Call the airline ahead of time and request a wheelchair to help you get around the airport, especially for layovers.  Even if you can make the walk, a wheelchair will help conserve energy so that you make it through the entire day.

If edema is a problem, take every opportunity to elevate your feet.  By the end of a traveling day your ankles are going to be swollen, combating it early will help.

Get luggage with wheels.  A bag that seems manageable at the beginning of the day will be very heavy by the end of the day.

Carry emergency food incase you get stuck somewhere that you can not get something to eat.

When possible travel with somebody that can help you with luggage, getting around, etc.

Alert flight attendants of any special needs you may have as soon as you board the plane.

Avoid window seats and/or close window shades to avoid UV light.  Sun block is also a good idea.
