Why I Have Lupus

I get emails and unsolicited medical advice all the time suggesting a myriad of reasons why I have Lupus, what causes Lupus, miracle Lupus cures, and what is holding me back from being cured.  Some of them crack me up but all of them really get under my skin!  None of these methods have had proper clinical testing, most times we don't even know if they are safe.

A lot of times, they parade testimonials of people who say they have been cured,  this especially irks me because Lupus patients can be so desperate to get relief they can be easy targets.

I just thought I would share some of things I have been told first as a warning, and second just for something to laugh at.

Lupus is a result of not believing in yourself enough.  Repeating "I stand up for myself" daily will cure Lupus.

Lupus is a result of not having enough sugars in your diet.  Take expensive, unproven glyconutrients to cure Lupus.

You are not cured because you don't believe in God enough.

Lupus is caused by dehydration.  I am sure my doctors would find this one interesting being that I am not dehydrated.

Lupus is caused by an underlying virus, take low dose daily antibiotics to cure it.  (Antibiotics kill bacteria not viruses)

Lupus can be cured with chiropractic adjustment or acupuncture.

Food additives, dyes or preservatives cause Lupus.  Aspartame is the most common one named.  There has been no scientific proof that any food, food additive, dye or preservative causes Lupus.

Expensive, unproven, possibly dangerous herbs, enzymes, vitamins, minerals, and supplements treat or cure Lupus.  There are hundreds of these products out there that promise the world with little to no proof to back it up.  ALWAYS talk to your doctor before taking ANY herb, supplement, medication, etc.!  (I personally had an allergic reaction to one and my pancreas is still paying the price)

Of course there is always the, "you just need more exercise" or "you are just lazy" or "everyone has bad days".

Mercury Poisoning especially from tooth fillings.

Whey Protein (basically unpasteurized milk) cures Lupus.

Aloe Vera Juice cures Lupus.

Far Infrared light cures Lupus.

We are not saying that some of these things couldn't help some people, simply that they do not CURE Lupus and there is no scientific proof that they help anything.  For more information on proven Lupus treatments, visit our Lupus treatments page.
